Winner of a GOLD SASI (Shop America Salutes Innovation) at the recent ONE Travel Conference in Las Vegas!
Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas won a GOLD SASI Award for their entry, “Time to Shop” The Turn-Around Story of Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas. “Time to Shop” is the case study of Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas and how after declining sales of more than a year, plus a loss of tenants, they re-launched their new Travel & Tourism Program and saw positive results in sales within the fourth month of what was a long-term strategy to make the Center healthy again. Under most circumstances, these types of outreach programs usually do not show results until anywhere from one to three years! The Program was a comprehensive B2B outreach initiative that targeted the travel trade, especially the tour operators, who had the greatest propensity to drive both group business and FIT travel to the center. Combined with the opening of key new stores such as H&M and Samsonite, the program saw results within the first few months. In addition to an aggressive outreach and trade show schedule, programs were supplemented with social media, public relations, special events, e-blast programs, new collateral, shopping packages, group-friendly dining programs, upgraded fulfillment for the traveler and enhanced tour guide incentive programs.
Honorees of “Time to Shop” included:
Missy Heanue, Rouse Properties
Megan Stagnaro, Rouse Properties
Robin Hanson, Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas
Carolyn J. Feimster, CJF Marketing International
Z.J. Tong, ChinaPro Marketing Partners
SASI-ONE Awards recognize prominent leaders in the tourism industry for their vision and commitment to developing shopping and cultural tourism and is sponsored by CenterCal Properties in partnership with Shop America Alliance and the U.S. Cultural & Heritage Tourism Marketing Council.
A variety of topics were covered at this year’s ONE Travel Conference, entitled “Thriving Through Transition”. No doubt our shopping center industry is in a state of transition with competition coming from all angles, especially the on-line “disruption”. But there are some bright spots and many were featured and discussed at this year’s conference.
Luxury is surviving and in fact, doing very well. The panel, “How We Cater to Luxury Travelers” featured case studies from South Coast Plaza, Macerich, Fashion Show/Grand Canal Shops in Las Vegas and the Madison Avenue BID (Business Improvement District) in NYC. It also featured the newly formed USA Luxury Shopping Consortium, an elite portfolio of leading luxury shopping centers in America’s premier travel destinations. Each center contributes a curated collection of fine designer labels, contemporary brands, luxury department stores and award-winning signature restaurants along with incentives for the traveler. Formed and managed by Kathy Anderson, Owner of Anderson Retail Tourism Marketing, more information is available at

To stay competitive, it takes collaboration. Few centers, if any, can survive on their own without the necessary community partnerships. Rose Hapanowich, Destiny USA in Syracuse NY, spoke on Developing Tourism Partners in Your Community. She offered great advice and insight on how to collaborate with shopping, cultural, events, dining, hotel and other attraction partners for great results.
It’s Different Over There! This was an entertaining look at the interrelationship of cultural differences, business practices, travel booking patterns and media consumption around the world by Larry Cohen, Northeast Media and Essentially America. Write Larry at if you would like a copy of his presentation.
The SHOP AMERICA WHITE PAPER on International Arrivals & Spending was presented by Rosemary McCormick, President, Shop America Alliance and US Cultural & Heritage Tourism Marketing Council. This excellent data is available upon request.
